The Lake Eyre Basin is a very special part of Australia, it covers one sixth of the continent and holds some of the rarest, least exploited ecosystems on the planet. Lake Eyre was considered permanently dry since its discovery in 1840 until its first recorded filling in 1949. Fillings of Lake Eyre were still considered as isolated, unique and independent events, in the decades that followed.
Other rivers draining the more than a million square kilometres of the Basin either contribute to Lake Eyre only rarely, or in the case of some Central Australian streams, become lost in the sands of the Simpson Desert and never reach the lake. But now, due to the heavy rains in Qeensland the rivers have filled which means that Lake Eyre will have water within the next couple of weeks. This ‘once in a decade’ happening at the timeless beauty of Lake Eyre Basin brings a spectacular power of attraction for the bird and wildlife of Australia. Marvellous views over the lake, and a unique gathering of the bird and wildlife in Australia, will make for a holiday your clients will never forget.
