Botanical Gardens of Ostrog
Located north of Split are the award-winning Botanical Gardens of Ostrog, a result of many years of hard work by both students and teachers of Ostrog primary school. Work started in the 1970’s to ‘tidy-up’ the wasteland that surrounded the school, but clearly this project meant a great deal more and in 1986 it was officially declared a Botanical Garden. The gardens extend to almost 4 acres around the school, with approximately 1400 different species of plants and 25 fields of trees. An olive grove was planted in 1983 with 170 olive trees and 45 different species of olives and every year students, together with their teachers, make olive oil which enjoys a unique flavour. The main objectives of the gardens are to be an aesthetic, ecological and educational resource for the children.
