Quito is a city to be explored on foot. Filled with fascinating nooks and crannies, beautiful churches and graced with an impressive backdrop of volcanoes, the city has the largest colonial centre found anywhere in South America - no wonder the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site! This September, the city will be combining its old world charm with a contemporary voice through ‘Arte Contemporáneo en patios de Quito’, an exciting exhibition opening doors onto the unseen world of private colonial patios however this time filled with the contemporary art of 10 national and international artists. Taking its influence from a 2009 exhibition in Southern Spain, this special art exhibition in Ecuador’s capital city is sure to open some of Quito’s beautiful private patios whilst simultaneously converting them into the showcase for 10 contemporary artists from Ecuador and beyond. Those looking to discover more of Ecuador’s interesting artistic heritage will be rewarded by heading south to Cuenca where A&K can put your clients in touch with important jewellers, ceramicists and of course the famous Panama hat makers. For the adventurous at heart, those who choose to travel overland rather than flying to Cuenca will be rewarded with a host of Andean towns full of local handicrafts not last of which is Tigua where a tradition of painting on sheep’s hide still abounds.

The restaurant Villarosa located in the city of Cuenca, within 35 minute flight from Quito, was recently recognized by the most prestigious travel specialists and earned for the second time the prize Fodor's Choice, its exquisite food, personal attention and friendly atmosphere make it worthy of this award. The varied menu consists of national and international dishes, as well as family recipes like eggs with artichokes and Mediterranean salad offered in a beautiful house of the Republican era. Tradition, elegance, comfort and good service seems to be the motto of Villarosa.

Ecuador owns a vast natural wealth. The diversity of its four regions has given rise to thousands of species of flora and fauna, being considered one of the 17 countries where most biodiversity of the planet is concentrated; the central area of the country offers excellent opportunities to enjoy beautiful landscapes and a wide range of native cultures. From the Eloy Alfaro railway station located in the Chimbacalle district, just 45 minutes from the main hotels in Quito, you can make an unforgettable ride aboard an old diesel locomotive that will take you to the city of Machachi, an area that moves with its completely green landscapes allowing a real vision of the local rural life, but the journey does not end here because from Machachi you can reach Cotopaxi National Park, well known for its fascinating beauty, rivers, ancient villages, fishing sites, Incan mounds, shrines, ponds and much more than you can imagine!.

We have received great news that LAN will open another route in Ecuador later this year flying to the Galapagos Islands from Quito. As with all routes currently operating to the Galapagos Islands, the flight will take off from Quito and make a technical stop in Guayaquil before continuing on to the Galapagos Islands. As yet we have not received their schedule although it is expected that operations will begin in September. We shall be keeping you updated when we have further information.
