Duration: 4 days
Overland excursion visiting the Taj Mahal and Red Fort, departing from Cochin and ending in Mumbai.
Highlights: Delhi, Agra, Taj Mahal, Red Fort.
FULL LENGTH TOUR DESCRIPTION
DAY 1 – Cochin to Delhi
This afternoon you will board a flight to Delhi, the capital of India and the gateway to the Taj Mahal. On arrival, transfer to your hotel to spend the night.
DAY 2 - Agra
Setting out after breakfast by road, you are headed to Agra, a city that was once the capital of the great Mughal Empire and is now best known for its architectural landmarks the Taj Mahal and the Agra Fort. On arrival, check in at your hotel. Then you will visit the Agra Fort, which lies on the bend of the River Yamuna. Emperor Akbar built it as his citadel over the years 1565-1573 in a fine architectural style with imposing gates, walls of red sandstone and moat that dominates the center of the city.
In the evening, drive to the Taj Mahal to glimpse the monument graced by the light of the setting sun. This beautiful mausoleum in pure white marble is an object of astonishing beauty and an architectural marvel. Mumtaz Mahal, the wife of Emperor Shah Jehan, died at the age of 39 giving birth to her fourteenth child. The emperor resolved to build his wife a memorial surpassing anything the world had ever seen in beauty and, it must be admitted, wild extravagance. Shah Jehan and Mumtaz Mahal are now both buried in the underground chamber of the Taj Mahal.
After visiting the Taj Mahal, dinner and overnight are at your hotel.
DAY 3 – Agra to Delhi
Enjoy an early morning visit to the Taj Mahal to experience its splendor and beauty in the
glow of the rising sun, a wonderfully different sight from the Taj Mahal you visited yesterday at sunset. Small battery powered buses will take you right up to the entrance to the grounds of the Taj Mahal. After passing through the arch of the entrance gateway, visitors are asked to remove their shoes prior to entering the Taj Mahal. To avoid the discomfort of walking barefoot, cloth shoe covers will be tied by attendants over your feet. After the visit to the Taj Mahal, you return to the hotel for breakfast, then depart to Delhi by coach. After lunch in Delhi, explore the capital of India. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
DAY 4 – Delhi to Mumbai
Transfer to the airport in Delhi for a flight to Mumbai where you will re-board the ship.
SHORT LENGTH TOUR DESCRIPTION
On this 3-night overland excursion, you leave your ship in Cochin and fly to Delhi – your jumping off point to visit Agra and the spectacular Taj Mahal. An overnight stay in Agra affords the opportunity to see the Taj Mahal cast in the glow of both sunset and sunrise. Then it’s back to Delhi to explore the bustling capital and spend the night before flying to meet your ship in Mumbai.
