DETAILS

FULL LENGTH TOUR DESCRIPTION
Port Blair, the administrative capital and only town of any size in the Andaman Islands, has the lively air of any Indian market town. It is pleasantly located on the main harbour and there are excellent views from many vantage points due to its hilly terrain.

Start your visit with a stop at the Cellular Jail. Built between 1886 and 1906 by the British to house dangerous criminals, it was subsequently used to place Indian freedom fighters until independence in 1947. This colossal edifice has mutely witnessed the most inhumane atrocities borne by convicts, who were mostly freedom fighters. Now declared a national memorial, there is a site museum with photographs and list of convicts held, a death house and the gallows, where you can get an impression of the conditions within the prison in the early 1900’s and the implements used for torture.

Next, learn about the lifestyle of the local tribes in the Anthropological Museum. Through the museum’s mini reproductions and model villages and artifacts, one can witness the tribal life of the island’s people. This informative museum has displays about the four Negroid tribes of the Andamans (Jarawas, Sentinelese, Andamanese & Onges) and two Mongolid tribes of the Nicobars (Nicobarese & Shompens).

Before returning to the ship, stop at the Marine Museum to view its comprehensive collection of corals and shells and display of 350 species of marine life.
