In the midst of the forested mountains of Ajloun in the north of Jordan, near to the Ajloun tourism trail, tourists can experience local culture at its best with a touch of warm authentic Jordanian hospitality. Mother of three, Um Ahmad, runs a small bed and breakfast at her home, to welcome guests to the area and earn an income for her family.
Um Ahmad’s husband wanted to turn his home into a guesthouse where his family could host visitors and get to meet people from around the world. We also wanted to make a living out of this project and be able to secure his children's education.
Sadly, her husband passed away suddenly in 2010. However Um Ahmad persisted in preparing her home to a visitor-friendly standard, furnishing the rooms with beds and cupboards, along with adding a television, fridge and kitchen table to the common area. Um Ahmad was then ready to start receiving tourists last year, providing them with meals and accommodation through a grant support from USAID/Siyaha.

The word is getting out that Jordan is not just about Petra and Indiana Jones. Yes, the ancient ‘Red Rose city’ is still the jewel in Jordan’s crown, but sights such as Wadi Rum, Jerash and Madaba are adding weight to the country’s tourism boom. One of the most open, friendly and welcoming nations in the Middle East, Jordan is an example to other states in the region of how to modernise while preserving cherished ancient traditions. This year marks the 64th birthday of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, a relative baby on the global scene. Though poverty is still rife, Jordan’s economy is on the up, and its history and tourist infrastructure make it one of the most accessible Arab states for English-speaking travellers.

Never before has a person been able to appreciate the wonder that is Wadi rum in such breath-taking clarity. The sight of the natural rock formation and dunes of the desert seen from a hot air balloon is an out-of-this world experience. Wake up with the sun to experience optimal flying conditions in the gentle morning breeze and brisk air. As the desert expands before you, your eyes will open to the tremendous power of the Earth’s quiet magnitude.
Balloon flights typically take place during the early morning hours and last for approximately one hour, but guests should allow 2 hours for the whole experience (excluding transport to and from site). Children of 6 years and older can participate in this experience…
The dress code for this trip is casual as - expect to wear khakis, jeans or shorts, a light jacket in the summer and a warm one in winter: temperatures drop dramatically as the balloon rises. Bring a sun hat or cap, and don’t forget that flat shoes are recommended.
