DAY 2

Nairobi - Nakuru

After breakfast drive to Lake Nakuru descending into the Great Rift Valley taking in the stunning scenery. Drive through Lake Nakuru National Park, famous for its visiting flocks of flamingoes, to Lion Hill Lodge.

After lunch there is time to relax or take a dip in the pool before your game viewing drive.

Lake Nakuru National park is host to what is widely regarded as the world’s greatest bird spectacle – more than a million lesser flamingoes flock to the lake seasonally, painting the green waters of the lake a fluttering pink. Nakuru has some of East Africa’s rarest creatures abound, including fast-growing populations of black and white rhino, the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe, buffalo, waterbuck and lion.

Lake Nakuru also enjoys a reputation as one of the best places in the country to spot the elusive leopard. In addition to the amazing wildlife and birdlife, the park offers a diversity of landscapes from the beautiful wooded and bush grasslands around the soda lake, to rocky escarpments and clusters of yellow thorn acacias under carpets of beautiful green grass.

The game drive will end with sundowners at a specially chosen vantage point overlooking the Mara plains. Sundowners are a Kenyan tradition, originally enjoyed by the white settlers. Take in the beauty of the rapid sunset as it transforms the world in a matter of minutes. Smiling waiters serve canapés and drinks as you enjoy the spectacular setting sun on the horizon.

DAY 4

Masai Mara

You have the next two days to enjoy game viewing as you venture out into the park led by your driver/guide.

Wildlife is abundant and the swaying grasslands ensure that animals are never out of sight. Elephants browse amongst the large herds of wildebeest and topi, gazelle, eland and buffalo. The plains offer a rich variety of food for the dominant predators: lion, leopard, hyena and cheetah. In the Mara River, hippos submerge while crocodiles sunbathe on the riverbanks. Between July and September, rain depending, the Masai Mara is host to the famous wildebeest migration which is one of the few remaining mass migrations of mammals in the world. During this time herds of over a million wildebeest will trawl their way through this region and they become the major focus for predatory activity.

On one of these afternoons there will be a talk by a traditional medicine man. The Maasai still live a very traditional lifestyle and he will show you how they use different trees and herbs from the area and their medicinal uses. Later, visit his village and learn about the Maasai culture in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Find out about the social structure of the homestead, the role of women in their society and other aspects of their daily life. Interaction and discussion is encouraged and often guests join in the dance or try to make fire using sticks and stone.

There are also options for a morning balloon safari or a half-day visit to Lake Victoria.

Balloon Safari: As the balloon is inflated against the first rays of sunrise your pilot will go through safety procedures. Once aloft, the balloon floats gently over the plains, giving a bird’s eye view of the game below as the sun creeps slowly over the horizon. After around one hour the balloon lands and nearby breakfast is already being prepared and, of course, glasses of bubbly to toast your flight in a tradition initiated by the Montgolfier brothers.

Lake Victoria Adventure : An early start this morning with a transfer to take you to the airstrip for a flight by light aircraft to Lake Victoria. On arrival enjoy an appetising full English breakfast before you board the boat for the morning. There will be the opportunity to try fishing for the legendary giant Nile perch found in these waters as you explore the myriad of tiny islands in this region of the lake. An experienced and knowledgeable fisherman captains each boat. There is the chance to stop at a traditional fishing village and see how the villagers live from day to day before returning to the airstrip for your return flight to the Masai Mara.
