Known as the “Garden City” and New Zealand’s “most English of cities” - Christchurch is also the largest of the South Island’s centres. Today meet your guide and escape this “English” city venturing north to the Hurunui District, a leisurely forty-five minute drive travelling beyond the Canterbury Plains and passing through the quaint settlements of Woodend, Leithfield and Amberley.
The Christchurch and Canterbury region is an area that thrives on its agriculture farming and heritage; however you will explore the up-and-coming industry of wine making that has introduced some supreme vintages throughout the short time that it has been established. Ten minutes from Amberley, your food and wine tour commences with a visit to Pegasus Bay, a family owned and operated company who were pioneers for local grape growing and wine making. Enjoy sampling a selection of their delicious wines and a tour with the wine maker. Continue onto Canterbury House, a boutique winery and restaurant where you will be treated to wine tastings followed by lunch.
Following lunch, proceed into the rustic settlement of Waipara where you will find, nestled amongst the sun-drenched vineyards of the Waipara Valley, the small family operation of Athena Olive Groves. Learn about the fascinating formation of their ‘Canterbury First’ cold pressed extra virgin olive oil and sample their exquisitely flavoursome olive creations. Following your journey, you will return back to the ship by coach.
