Although details are still to be released, it has been announced that a Travel Museum will open at Jerónimos Monastery, in the Belém district of Lisbon. The museum will focus on discoveries made by the Portuguese during their maritime expansion. A&K will of course keep an eye on the developments and will look forward to offering this as a sightseeing option in our Portuguese itineraries.

Currently Spain enjoys relatively relaxed tobacco legislation in comparison to other European countries, however that is set to change in 2011. At present smoking is not permitted in shops, schools, hospitals, cultural centres and on public transport, however this will be extended to include bars, cafes, restaurants and all other enclosed public spaces (however hotel rooms will be exempt).

The UNESCO World Heritage Site has in the past been open to the public, but fears that human breath was destroying the fascinating prehistoric paintings led it to being shut completely in 2002. However, when they were open in the past they proved so popular that at one point there was a three year waiting list to visit the caves; this is why it has probably prompted the Spanish government to re-open the attraction. Whether you decide to visit the delicate caves, or the exact replica in the nearby museum in Santillana del Mar A&K can assist with your plans - please email spain@europe.abercrombiekent.com

For over a thousand years pilgrims have traversed the mountains and plains of Spain on the greatest of all pilgrimage routes in Europe, to the shrine of St James the Apostle in Santiago de Compostela. Today this pilgrimage is increasing in popularity and 2010 is a very special moment to make the pilgrimage because the Saint’s Day falls on a Sunday making it a Holy Year, known as the “Xacobeo.” To travel all or just a short part of the Camino is an unique experience, not just for the devout but for all travellers who wish to discover some of the most beautiful corners of Spain. With A&K you can enjoy many options; perhaps driving from the Pyrenees for a few days along one of the most interesting sections of the Camino, visiting monasteries and vineyards, cathedrals and castles. Or, on another section, from the Cathedral city of León over the mountains into green Galicia and on to Santiago itself. Alternatively why not walk a few stages of the Camino, accompanied by an expert guide and with a support vehicle on hand to carry your luggage and pick you up if you get tired? The choices are many, contact
