Programme Overview

Duration: 1 day

This excursion is a must for everybody visiting the “Island of Spices”.

Highlights: Maruhabi Ruins, Spice Garden, Kidichi

DETAILS

FULL LENGTH TOUR DESCRIPTION
Depart from the pier and drive past the house where Dr. David Livingstone stayed while planning his explorations into the interior. Then visit the ruins of Maruhubi Palace, built as a harem and later destroyed by fire.

Proceed to the countryside, where your professional guide offers the first time visitor a chance to see and taste the spices grown mostly in off-road regions not easily accessible. Stop in a green area where examples of spice plants are available for you to smell, taste, touch and see. The great variety of spices and plants grown here is used in food flavouring and preparation, cosmetics, dyes and traditional medicines. A local boy climbs up a tall coconut tree while you walk through the spice area and will serenade you with a school song as he uses his legs to shimmy back down the swaying palm. It is possible, depending upon the season, to sample some of the edible fruits as well. Spice packets are available for sale on the rustic tables set up whenever visitors are spotted.

After this experience, you will visit the Persian baths at Kidichi, built by the first Sultan for his Persian wife. Thereafter, board your coach and return to the pier.
