Departing from the pier by coach with your specialist guide, you will enjoy an engaging commentary as you are driven along the Beach Road through lively St Kilda and onto grand tree-lined boulevard St Kilda Road into Melbourne’s world famous inner city parklands. From here you will enjoy a spectacular view of Melbourne from the forecourt of the Shrine of Remembrance before continuing on to Federation Square for the start of your ‘Arcades and Alleyways’ walking tour. As you will discover, the gold rush of the 1850s really kick-started the prodigious growth of one of the greatest cities of the Victorian era.
On your walk you will explore fascinating alleyways, encounter the glorious arcades of downtown Marvellous Melbourne, and much more. Hidden architectural gems will be revealed and some truly great sights including the stunning Gothic Bank and the gloriously ornate Old Melbourne Stock Exchange will be highlighted. As you move through the alleyways you will discover the inner workings of this great Victorian city. You will admire the magnificent redevelopment of the historic General Post Office, be charmed by the city’s oldest arcade – the Royal Arcade (1869) – and marvel at the Block Arcade; undoubtedly the most beautiful shopping arcade in Australia with its magnificent architecture, majestic decorative scheme and impressive window displays.
As you wander to morning coffee in Federation Square your walk takes in the delightful Town Hall/City Square precinct and, with services permitting, you will peep into St Paul’s Anglican (Episcopalian) Cathedral. You will sample Melbourne’s famous coffee culture at Federation Square before walking across Prince’s Bridge enjoying city vistas along the way.
You reboard your coach for a leisurely sightseeing drive back to ship.
