Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive Bayeux

Arrive in Bayeux where you are met and transferred to your hotel in Port-en-Bessin.

Overnight: Château La Chenevière

Day 2 - D-Day Landing Beaches

Some of the fiercest fighting of World War II took place around Normandy’s coast after the D-Day landings. Explore the region, including the Pointe du Hoc. At Omaha Beach, examine several sites from both the German and the U.S. perspectives. Hear about Operation Aquatint, a 1942 Commando raid on what was to become known as Omaha Beach at the time of D-Day. Visit the U.S. Military Cemetery and Interpretation Center at Colleville sur Mer, overlooking Omaha Beach.

Continue to the Artificial Harbour at Arromanches that was built in secret, towed across the English Channel and set up in 11 days. If you are a history buff, you may want to add the services of a locally based general who works with the BBC as a commentator on D-Day and the Battle of Normandy.

Overnight: Château La Chenevière

Meal Plan: B

Day 3 - Mont St. Michel

Head to Mont St. Michel to visit the Benedictine abbey of Mont St. Michel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which sits atop a mass of granite surrounded by water and sand flats. It took 500 years to complete the construction. Legend has it that the Archangel Michael appeared to the Bishop of Avranches, inspiring him to build the abbey at this location. His request was ignored until Michael burned a hole in the bishop's skull with his finger. After lunch at leisure, continue to Villedieu-les-Poêles, a town famous for its copperware.

Overnight: Château La Chenevière
